Monroe Real Estate Profile
Monroe County offers a pleasant blend of the urban and rural. Michigan's southeastern-most county is a gateway to the state, located between the major metropolitan centers of Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Toledo. Monroe is the county seat and Michigan's only Lake Erie port. The River Raisin flows through downtown Monroe towards the lake, a few miles away. Shady parks, beautifully restored Victorian houses and local storefronts make strolling the historic district a pleasure.
Monroe, MI Local History
Named Frenchtown by its original settlers, Monroe adopted the name of the nation's fifth president in 1824. During the War of 1812, Americans fought their bloodiest battle on the banks of the River Raisin. An infamous massacre of injured soldiers afterward gave rise to the war's rallying cry, “Remember the River Raisin.” Monroe was the childhood home of General George Armstrong Custer, the Civil War hero defeated at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Custer's statue, erected by the state in 1910, stands in downtown Monroe.
