Ypsilanti, MI Local History
In 1809 French explorers established a trading post on the west bank of the Huron River, in the new Michigan territory. The city first appeared on a map in 1824 that established a route between Detroit and Chicago (today's Michigan Avenue). Its name comes from the Greek patriot General Demetrius Ypsilanti. Early 19th century Americans admired Ypsilanti's heroic fight for independence against the Turks, which they identified with the struggles of their own young nation.
